Data sovereignty
The principle that a people have the right to govern the collection, ownership, stewardship, and application of data about their community, including but not limited to their language. For Indigenous communities, this extends to control over how language materials are stored, shared, used in AI systems, and benefited from. Often discussed alongside frameworks like the CARE Principles, which provide more specific guidance on how to enact data sovereignty in practice.
