Extractive research
Research that takes from a community (data, knowledge, time) without returning value, sharing control, or sustaining a relationship. Indigenous communities have a long history with extractive research, which is the source of much earned mistrust. Language documentation has moved meaningfully away from this toward community-driven practice, but AI and NLP research have a long way to go. Extractive research is often done by very well-meaning people, but good intentions don't change the impact of the work on communities.
