Cognitive Offloading
Cognitive offloading is letting an external tool do thinking we would otherwise do ourselves. Some of this is ordinary and useful, the way a calculator or a written note frees us to focus elsewhere. The concern with AI is one of degree and habit: when a model is used to replace engagement with a problem rather than support it, the deeper learning never happens, and skills that are not exercised (memory, factual knowledge, higher-order reasoning) can atrophy, much as detailed mental maps faded once GPS navigation became the norm.
